OpenRemote has an incomplete fix for CVE-2026-40882: XXE in KNXProtocol.startAssetImport() allows arbitrary file read via unprotected XMLInputFactory

CVE-2026-54640GHSA-7v6w-c3f4-9wpq

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (io.openremote:openremote-agent 1.24.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary The fix for CVE-2026-40882 addressed only the Velbus asset import handler. The KNX asset import handler (KNXProtocol) processes user-uploaded ETS project ZIP files through Saxon XSLT and XMLInputFactory.newInstance() with no XXE protection, allowing any authenticated user to read arbitrary files from the server filesystem (e.g. /etc/passwd, openmrs-runtime.properties, cloud credential files). Details Incomplete patch CVE-2026-40882 was fixed by introducing createSecureDocumentBuilderFactory() in AbstractVelbusProtocol.java with five XXE-blocking features. The parallel asset import handler in KNXProtocol.java was not updated and retains two unprotected XML parsing calls on the same user-controlled data. Patched file — AbstractVelbusProtocol.java: Vulnerable file — KNXProtocol.java, lines 229–249: Data flow Comparison with patched code | Handler | XML parser | DTD disabled | Status | |---|---|---|---| | AbstractVelbusProtocol | DocumentBuilderFactory | ✅ 5 features set |…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-54640

Advisory: OpenRemote has an incomplete fix for CVE-2026-40882: XXE in KNXProtocol.startAssetImport() allows arbitrary file read via unprotected XMLInputFactory
IDs: CVE-2026-54640, GHSA-7v6w-c3f4-9wpq
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-54640 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:54 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.6)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: io.openremote:openremote-agent 1.24.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven io.openremote:openremote-agent: affected <= 1.24.1; fixed in 1.24.2

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven io.openremote:openremote-agent: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on io.openremote:openremote-agent.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-7v6w-c3f4-9wpq (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-7v6w-c3f4-9wpq lists affected ranges: Maven io.openremote:openremote-agent >=0 <=1.24.1)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
