IzPack has Path Traversal in UnpackerBase that allows writing files outside the installation directory via malicious pack entries
CVE-2026-54550GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.codehaus.izpack:izpack-installer 5.2.7), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary IzPack's `UnpackerBase.unpack()` resolves pack-file target paths without any canonical-path or directory-containment check. An attacker who distributes a trojanized installer JAR (the format is unsigned) can include pack entries whose `targetPath` contains `../` sequences. When a victim runs the installer the file is written to an attacker-chosen location on disk under the victim's privileges — including startup folders, PATH directories, or system locations.
Details Vulnerable method: `com.izforge.izpack.installer.unpacker.UnpackerBase.unpack()` Source file: `izpack-installer/src/main/java/com/izforge/izpack/installer/unpacker/UnpackerBase.java` Vulnerable lines (5.2.4): ~618–627 The relevant code path is: ```java String targetPath = packFile.getTargetPath(); // attacker-controlled String path = IoHelper.translatePath(targetPath, variables); // separator swap ONLY File target = new File(path); // no canonical check // ... mkdirs() then file is written to…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-54550 Advisory: IzPack has Path Traversal in UnpackerBase that allows writing files outside the installation directory via malicious pack entries IDs: CVE-2026-54550, GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-54550 (revision 4, source checked 28 Oct 2026, 06:45 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.4) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.codehaus.izpack:izpack-installer 5.2.7. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Maven org.codehaus.izpack:izpack-installer: affected < 5.2.7; fixed in 5.2.7 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Maven org.codehaus.izpack:izpack-installer: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on org.codehaus.izpack:izpack-installer. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9 (OSV record GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9 lists affected ranges: Maven org.codehaus.izpack:izpack-installer >=0 <=5.2.6) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9 lists affected ranges: Maven org.codehaus.izpack:izpack-installer >=0 <=5.2.6) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9 lists affected ranges: Maven org.codehaus.izpack:izpack-installer >=0 <5.2.7) - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9 (OSV record GHSA-f63g-88cj-hjf9 lists affected ranges: Maven org.codehaus.izpack:izpack-installer >=0 <5.2.7 (fixed)) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
