nimiq-primitives: Panic in TrieProof::verify via child_index unwrap on equal-length keys

CVE-2026-54541GHSA-46wq-28cx-mhw4

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (nimiq-primitives 1.6.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact A malicious peer acting as a state-sync source can crash a syncing node by sending a crafted TrieChunk whose proof contains two TrieProofNodes with identical keys. TrieProof::verify() calls TrieProofNode::childindex() (primitives/src/trie/trieproofnode.rs:94), which unconditionally unwraps KeyNibbles::get(self.key.len()). Because isprefixof returns true for two equal keys, execution reaches get(len), which returns None, and the unwrap() panics. The panic is reached from untrusted network input (ResponseChunk → commitchunks → putchunk → proof.verify()) before any cryptographic proof verification, so the attacker does not need to produce a valid proof. Exploitation requires the attacker to be selected as the victim's sync peer while the victim is performing state sync, and the resulting crash is transient (the node restarts and re-syncs). Affected: core-rs-albatross <= 1.5.1 (nimiq-primitives). Patches Fixed in 1.6.0 via https://github.com/nimiq/core-rs-albatross/pull/3789…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-54541

Advisory: nimiq-primitives: Panic in TrieProof::verify via child_index unwrap on equal-length keys
IDs: CVE-2026-54541, GHSA-46wq-28cx-mhw4
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-54541 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:43 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Low (CVSS 3.7)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: nimiq-primitives 1.6.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io nimiq-primitives: affected < 1.6.0; fixed in 1.6.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io nimiq-primitives: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on nimiq-primitives.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
