Open WebUI: Stored XSS in Mermaid Markdown Preview
CVE-2026-54011GHSA-v8qj-hxv7-mgvv
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (open-webui 0.9.6), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary Open WebUI renders Mermaid blocks from Markdown files in the file preview panel and inserts the generated SVG into the DOM using innerHTML. Because Mermaid is configured with securityLevel: 'loose', attacker-controlled Mermaid content can be rendered unsafely in this flow. A working payload was validated through the Markdown preview path, resulting in JavaScript execution in the victim’s browser under the application origin. This is a confirmed stored XSS vulnerability reachable through normal product functionality. Affected Version - main - Reproduced on v0.8.12 Affected Code Mermaid is initialized in permissive mode: https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui/blob/9bd84258d09eefe7bf975878fb0e31a5dadfe0f8/src/lib/utils/index.ts#L1698 The file preview path renders Mermaid output and injects the returned SVG into the DOM: https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui/blob/9bd84258d09eefe7bf975878fb0e31a5dadfe0f8/src/lib/components/chat/FileNav/FilePreview.svelte#L133 Impact A…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-54011 Advisory: Open WebUI: Stored XSS in Mermaid Markdown Preview IDs: CVE-2026-54011, GHSA-v8qj-hxv7-mgvv Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-54011 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:49 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 8.7) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: open-webui 0.9.6. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI open-webui: affected <= 0.9.5; fixed in 0.9.6 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show open-webui`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on open-webui. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-v8qj-hxv7-mgvv (OSV record GHSA-v8qj-hxv7-mgvv lists affected ranges: PyPI open-webui >=0 <0.9.6 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-v8qj-hxv7-mgvv (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-v8qj-hxv7-mgvv lists affected ranges: PyPI open-webui >=0 <=0.9.5) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
