picklescan has Arbitrary file read using io.FileIO
CVE-2026-53872GHSA-9726-w42j-3qjr
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (picklescan 0.0.35), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary Unsafe pickle deserialization allows unauthenticated attackers to read arbitrary server files and perform SSRF. By chaining io.FileIO and urllib.request.urlopen, an attacker can bypass RCE-focused blocklists to exfiltrate sensitive data (example: /etc/passwd) to an external server. Details The application deserializes untrusted pickle data. While RCE keywords (os, exec) may be blocked, the exploit abuses standard library features: 1. io.FileIO: Opens local files without using builtins.open. 2. urllib.request.urlopen: Accepts the file object as an iterable body for a POST request. 3. Data Exfiltration: The file content is streamed directly to an attacker-controlled URL during unpickling. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-53872 Advisory: picklescan has Arbitrary file read using `io.FileIO` IDs: CVE-2026-53872, GHSA-9726-w42j-3qjr Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-53872 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:45 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.7) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: picklescan 0.0.35. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI picklescan: affected < 0.0.35; fixed in 0.0.35 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show picklescan`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on picklescan. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-9726-w42j-3qjr (OSV record GHSA-9726-w42j-3qjr lists affected ranges: PyPI picklescan >=0 <0.0.35 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-9726-w42j-3qjr (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-9726-w42j-3qjr lists affected ranges: PyPI picklescan >=0 <0.0.35) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
