Envoy Gateway: OCI layer extraction allocates make([]byte, h.Size) from untrusted tar header
CVE-2026-53717GHSA-h7pq-86h8-rp5x
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/envoyproxy/gateway 1.8.1, 1.7.4), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Vulnerability report without repro case. Repro case may be added later after harness is complete. Preconditions (4): - Tenant can create EnvoyExtensionPolicy (baseline) - Controller has egress to attacker-controlled OCI registry - No registry allowlist (none exists in code) - Layer presents Docker/OCI media type Description At imagefetcher.go:287, make([]byte, h.Size) uses the attacker-controlled tar-header size; the LimitReader at :278 bounds bytes read from the stream but not the header-declared size returned by tr.Next() (a 512-byte header can claim a multi-TB entry via PAX/GNU encoding). Reached from untrusted tenant input via EnvoyExtensionPolicy spec.wasm[].code.image.url (envoyextensionpolicy.go:1157 → cache.go:262/299 → imagefetcher.go:218 → :287), and the allocation happens for every tar entry regardless of filename. The resulting Go runtime OOM throw is unrecoverable and, because the CRD persists, crash-loops the shared controller — single-request, non-volumetric,…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-53717 Advisory: Envoy Gateway: OCI layer extraction allocates make([]byte, h.Size) from untrusted tar header IDs: CVE-2026-53717, GHSA-h7pq-86h8-rp5x Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-53717 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:25 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/envoyproxy/gateway 1.8.1, 1.7.4. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go github.com/envoyproxy/gateway: affected >= 1.8.0-rc.0, < 1.8.1; < 1.7.4; fixed in 1.8.1, 1.7.4 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go github.com/envoyproxy/gateway: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on github.com/envoyproxy/gateway. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-h7pq-86h8-rp5x (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-h7pq-86h8-rp5x lists affected ranges: Go github.com/envoyproxy/gateway >=1.8.0-rc.0 =0 <1.7.4) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
