What to do
Partial vendor fix. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check back for a fix.

Source description

Summary oras-go's auth.Client follows the realm URL from a registry's WWW-Authenticate: Bearer challenge without validating its scheme or host. The realm field is server-controlled by design in the OCI/distribution spec — registries legitimately point token requests at a separate auth endpoint (e.g. Docker Hub's registry-1.docker.io - auth.docker.io), so cross-host realms on public DNS names are not in themselves a vulnerability. Two specific patterns, however, are never legitimate under any registry trust model and can be abused by a malicious or compromised registry (or a man-in-the-middle on a plaintext connection): 1. SSRF to internal networks. A realm of http://169.254.169.254/... (AWS/Azure IMDS), http://10.0.0.x/... (RFC 1918), or http://127.0.0.1/... causes oras-go running on a cloud VM or corporate workstation to issue outbound HTTP requests from inside the user's trust boundary to an endpoint the user did not choose. The user's stored credentials are attached to those…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-48978 Advisory: oras-go: Malicious registry can hijack Bearer token realm to exfiltrate credentials and refresh tokens IDs: CVE-2026-48978, GHSA-xf85-363p-868w Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-48978 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:24 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Low (CVSS 2.1) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Partial vendor fix; fixed versions by package: oras.land/oras-go/v2 2.6.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go oras.land/oras-go/v2: affected < 2.6.1; fixed in 2.6.1 - Go oras.land/oras-go: affected <= 1.2.7 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go oras.land/oras-go/v2: check the installed version with your package manager. - Go oras.land/oras-go: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on oras.land/oras-go/v2, oras.land/oras-go. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-xf85-363p-868w (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-xf85-363p-868w lists affected ranges: Go oras.land/oras-go/v2 >=0 =0 <=1.2.7) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
