Element Call reports full URLs of visited pages to analytics server

CVE-2026-48007GHSA-6vhh-4xw6-h2h2

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (@element-hq/element-call-embedded 0.19.4), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Impact Element Call versions 0.5.17 through 0.19.3 report analytics data to a PostHog server, when configured to by a posthog key in config.json or by the posthogApiHost and posthogApiKey URL parameters. Several fields of this data ($initialpersoninfo, $sessionentryurl, and $currenturl) were found to contain the full URL of the user's visited page, including the fragment. Users of a standalone Element Call ‘SPA’ instance such as https://call.element.io may therefore have reported the full URLs of certain calls, including encryption passwords, to the configured PostHog server, potentially compromising the confidentiality of the calls to actors who could access both the PostHog analytics data and the encrypted media streams. The same issue is present in Element Call's embedded package, but in practice it does not impact applications using this package (including Element Web, Element Desktop, Element X iOS, and Element X Android) because they distribute encryption keys over Matrix…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-48007

Advisory: Element Call reports full URLs of visited pages to analytics server
IDs: CVE-2026-48007, GHSA-6vhh-4xw6-h2h2
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-48007 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:55 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.6)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: @element-hq/element-call-embedded 0.19.4. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm @element-hq/element-call-embedded: affected >= 0.5.17, <= 0.19.3; fixed in 0.19.4

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls @element-hq/element-call-embedded --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on @element-hq/element-call-embedded.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
