OpenTelemetry Operator for Kubernetes's ServiceMonitor bearerTokenFile reads arbitrary local file and sends contents as bearer auth

CVE-2026-47701GHSA-cxh2-4639-vmc5

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-operator 0.152.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Affected Repository: github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-operator Component: cmd/otel-allocator (TargetAllocator) Companion: Prometheus Operator API types (CRDs) Summary OpenTelemetry Operator's TargetAllocator watches ServiceMonitor resources via the Prometheus Operator CR watcher and converts each selected endpoint into a Prometheus scrape configuration entry. The endpoint field bearerTokenFile is preserved through the conversion as HTTPClientConfig.Authorization.CredentialsFile. The OpenTelemetry Collector, configured with the Prometheus receiver, then loads that scrape config and, at scrape time, reads the file from its own pod filesystem and sends the contents as Authorization: Bearer ... to the scrape endpoint. A tenant who can create or update a ServiceMonitor selected by TargetAllocator can set bearerTokenFile: /var/run/secrets/kubernetes.io/serviceaccount/token and a scrape target the tenant controls. The Collector then ships its mounted service account JWT to that…

Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-operator 0.152.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-operator: affected < 0.152.0; fixed in 0.152.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-operator: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-operator.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
