Fleet: IP spoofing allows bypassing API rate limiting
CVE-2026-46356GHSA-mxmp-wr3w-rvqx
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/fleetdm/fleet/v4 4.80.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary A vulnerability in Fleet's IP extraction logic allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass API rate limiting by spoofing client IP headers. This may allow brute-force login attempts or other abuse against Fleet instances exposed to the public internet. Impact Fleet extracted client IP addresses from request headers (True-Client-IP, X-Real-IP, X-Forwarded-For) without validating that those headers originate from a trusted proxy. The extracted IP is used as the key for rate limiting and IP ban decisions. As a result, an attacker could rotate the value of these headers on each request, causing Fleet to treat each attempt as coming from a different client. This effectively bypasses per-IP rate limits on sensitive endpoints such as the login API, enabling unrestricted brute-force or credential stuffing attacks. This issue primarily affects Fleet instances that are directly exposed to the internet without a reverse proxy that overwrites forwarded-IP headers. Instances behind a…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-46356 Advisory: Fleet: IP spoofing allows bypassing API rate limiting IDs: CVE-2026-46356, GHSA-mxmp-wr3w-rvqx Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-46356 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:29 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.9) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/fleetdm/fleet/v4 4.80.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go github.com/fleetdm/fleet/v4: affected < 4.80.1; fixed in 4.80.1 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go github.com/fleetdm/fleet/v4: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on github.com/fleetdm/fleet/v4. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-mxmp-wr3w-rvqx (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-mxmp-wr3w-rvqx lists affected ranges: Go github.com/fleetdm/fleet/v4 >=0 <4.80.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
