OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation: Redis error text is exported in span status messages
CVE-2026-45679GHSA-8rrq-wcg8-cv5q
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (go.opentelemetry.io/obi 0.9.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary OBI exports raw Redis error text as the span status message. Because Redis error replies can contain attacker-controlled or sensitive values, this behavior can exfiltrate tokens, PII, or other confidential input into telemetry backends and inject untrusted text into downstream analysis systems. Details In pkg/ebpf/common/redisdetecttransform.go, getRedisError trims the raw error buffer and stores it directly in request.DBError.Description. Later, pkg/appolly/app/request/span.go returns that description as the exported status message for Redis spans whenever the span status is non-zero. There is no opt-in control or sanitization beyond CRLF trimming. As a result, raw Redis error text becomes part of OTLP-exported status metadata by default. PoC Local request-layer testing recorded a status message containing ERR invalid password for user bob secret=TOPSECRET, which shows that unfiltered Redis error text reaches the exported status message. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-45679 Advisory: OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation: Redis error text is exported in span status messages IDs: CVE-2026-45679, GHSA-8rrq-wcg8-cv5q Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-45679 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:23 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: go.opentelemetry.io/obi 0.9.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go go.opentelemetry.io/obi: affected < 0.9.0; fixed in 0.9.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go go.opentelemetry.io/obi: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on go.opentelemetry.io/obi. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-8rrq-wcg8-cv5q (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-8rrq-wcg8-cv5q lists affected ranges: Go go.opentelemetry.io/obi >=0 <0.9.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
