dbt MCP Server Logs Tool Arguments Including SQL Queries and Credentials in Plaintext Without Redaction When File Logging Is Enabled
CVE-2026-44969GHSA-7xgw-6qf3-7w59
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (dbt-mcp 1.17.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Discovered through manual source code review. Verified by PoC execution against a local dbt-mcp v1.15.1 installation. Summary DbtMCP.calltool() in src/dbtmcp/mcp/server.py logs the complete raw arguments dictionary at INFO level on every tool invocation (line 67) and again at ERROR level if the call raises an exception (lines 77–79). No field is redacted before logging. When the documented DBTMCPSERVERFILELOGGING=true feature is enabled, these log records are written to dbt-mcp.log in the project root directory as plaintext. Sensitive data — raw SQL queries, --vars payloads carrying credentials, node selectors — persists on disk indefinitely with no automatic rotation or deletion. Details Vulnerable log statements (server.py): arguments is the raw Python dict received from the MCP client. It is string-interpolated directly into the log message. On a tool call that raises an exception, the same dict is logged twice — once at INFO and once at ERROR. File logging is activated by…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-44969 Advisory: dbt MCP Server Logs Tool Arguments Including SQL Queries and Credentials in Plaintext Without Redaction When File Logging Is Enabled IDs: CVE-2026-44969, GHSA-7xgw-6qf3-7w59 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-44969 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:41 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Low (CVSS 2.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: dbt-mcp 1.17.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI dbt-mcp: affected <= 1.17.0; fixed in 1.17.1 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show dbt-mcp`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on dbt-mcp. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-7xgw-6qf3-7w59 (OSV record GHSA-7xgw-6qf3-7w59 lists affected ranges: PyPI dbt-mcp >=0 <1.17.1 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-7xgw-6qf3-7w59 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-7xgw-6qf3-7w59 lists affected ranges: PyPI dbt-mcp >=0 <=1.17.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
