axios Vulnerable to Full Man-in-the-Middle via Prototype Pollution Gadget in config.proxy
CVE-2026-44494GHSA-35jp-ww65-95wh
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (axios 1.16.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Vulnerability Disclosure: Full Man-in-the-Middle via Prototype Pollution Gadget in config.proxy Summary The Axios library is vulnerable to a Prototype Pollution "Gadget" attack that allows any Object.prototype pollution in the application's dependency tree to be escalated into a full Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attack — intercepting, reading, and modifying all HTTP traffic including authentication credentials. The HTTP adapter at lib/adapters/http.js:670 reads config.proxy via standard property access, which traverses the prototype chain. Because proxy is not present in Axios defaults, the merged config object has no own proxy property, making it trivially injectable via prototype pollution. Once injected, setProxy() routes all HTTP requests through the attacker's proxy server. Unlike the transformResponse gadget (which is constrained by assertOptions to return true), the proxy gadget has zero constraints — the attacker gets a full MITM position with the ability to read all credentials…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-44494 Advisory: axios Vulnerable to Full Man-in-the-Middle via Prototype Pollution Gadget in `config.proxy` IDs: CVE-2026-44494, GHSA-35jp-ww65-95wh Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-44494 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:55 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 8.7) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: axios 1.16.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - npm axios: affected >= 1.0.0, < 1.16.0; fixed in 1.16.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `npm ls axios --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on axios. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-35jp-ww65-95wh (OSV record GHSA-35jp-ww65-95wh lists affected ranges: npm axios >=1.0.0 <1.16.0 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-35jp-ww65-95wh (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-35jp-ww65-95wh lists affected ranges: npm axios >=1.0.0 <1.16.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
