Axios has a Patch Bypass: Proxy-Authorization Header Injection via Prototype Pollution — Incomplete Null-Prototype Fix
CVE-2026-44489GHSA-654m-c8p4-x5fp
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (axios 1.16.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

[Patch Bypass] Proxy-Authorization Header Injection via Prototype Pollution — Incomplete Null-Prototype Fix in Axios 1.15.2 Summary The Object.create(null) fix introduced in Axios 1.15.2 (GHSA-q8qp-cvcw-x6jj) protects the top-level config object from prototype pollution. However, nested objects created by utils.merge() (e.g., config.proxy) are still constructed as plain {} with Object.prototype in their chain. The setProxy() function at lib/adapters/http.js:209-223 reads proxy.username, proxy.password, and proxy.auth without hasOwnProperty checks. When Object.prototype.username is polluted, setProxy() constructs a Proxy-Authorization header with attacker-controlled credentials and injects it into every proxied HTTP request. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.4) Affected Versions: 1.15.2 (and potentially 1.15.1) Vulnerable Component: lib/adapters/http.js (setProxy()) + lib/utils.js (merge()) CWE - CWE-1321: Improperly Controlled Modification of Object Prototype Attributes ('Prototype…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-44489 Advisory: Axios has a Patch Bypass: Proxy-Authorization Header Injection via Prototype Pollution — Incomplete Null-Prototype Fix IDs: CVE-2026-44489, GHSA-654m-c8p4-x5fp Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-44489 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:55 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Low (CVSS 3.7) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: axios 1.16.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - npm axios: affected >= 1.15.2, <= 1.15.2; fixed in 1.16.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `npm ls axios --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on axios. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-654m-c8p4-x5fp (OSV record GHSA-654m-c8p4-x5fp lists affected ranges: npm axios >=1.15.2 <1.16.0 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-654m-c8p4-x5fp (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-654m-c8p4-x5fp lists affected ranges: npm axios >=1.15.2 <=1.15.2) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
