ciguard: SCA HTTP client reads response body without size cap
CVE-2026-44219GHSA-xw8c-rrvx-f7xq
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (ciguard 0.8.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary Both SCA HTTP clients (src/ciguard/analyzer/sca/osv.py and src/ciguard/analyzer/sca/endoflife.py) call payload = json.loads(resp.read().decode('utf-8')) without a maximum-bytes cap. A hostile or compromised endoflife.date / OSV.dev (or a successful TLS MITM) could return a multi-GB response, exhausting the ciguard process's memory. Threat scenario ciguard process memory exhaustion → OOM kill or system swap thrash. Realistic when ciguard runs in CI with a limited memory budget (typical: 4-8 GB). No data integrity or confidentiality impact. Realism caveat: both URLs are hardcoded HTTPS, so this is a low-realism threat (HTTPS prevents MITM unless the attacker controls a trusted CA or hijacks DNS in a way that doesn't trigger cert validation). The unbounded read is structural defence-in-depth, not a directly exploitable bug today. Patch - New MAXRESPONSEBYTES = 5 1024 1024 (5 MB) constant in both modules. - body = resp.read(MAXRESPONSEBYTES + 1) with overflow check returns None…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-44219 Advisory: ciguard: SCA HTTP client reads response body without size cap IDs: CVE-2026-44219, GHSA-xw8c-rrvx-f7xq Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-44219 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:41 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.3) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: ciguard 0.8.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI ciguard: affected >= 0.6.0, <= 0.8.1; fixed in 0.8.2 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show ciguard`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on ciguard. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-xw8c-rrvx-f7xq (OSV record GHSA-xw8c-rrvx-f7xq lists affected ranges: PyPI ciguard >=0.6.0 <0.8.2 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-xw8c-rrvx-f7xq (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-xw8c-rrvx-f7xq lists affected ranges: PyPI ciguard >=0.6.0 <=0.8.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
