vm2 has a Sandbox Escape via Promise Constructor Unhandled Rejection (Process Crash DoS)
CVE-2026-44001GHSA-hw58-p9xv-2mjh
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (vm2 3.11.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary A sandbox escape vulnerability in vm2 v3.10.5 allows any sandboxed code to crash the host Node.js process via a single Promise constructor that triggers an unhandled rejection propagating to the host. The fix for CVE-2026-22709 (v3.10.2) only sanitized the onRejected callback in .then() and .catch() overrides and did not address the executor-to-unhandledRejection path. Details When sandboxed code creates a Promise whose executor sets Error.name to a Symbol() and then accesses .stack, V8's internal FormatStackTrace (C++) attempts Symbol.toString(), which throws a host-realm TypeError. Because this error originates inside the Promise executor and no .catch() handler is attached, it becomes an unhandled rejection that propagates to the host process. - lib/setup-sandbox.js:38 — localPromise wraps the native Promise constructor but does not wrap the executor in try-catch. - lib/setup-sandbox.js:165-230 — resetPromiseSpecies and the .then()/.catch() overrides sanitize the…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-44001 Advisory: vm2 has a Sandbox Escape via Promise Constructor Unhandled Rejection (Process Crash DoS) IDs: CVE-2026-44001, GHSA-hw58-p9xv-2mjh Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-44001 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:52 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 8.6) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: vm2 3.11.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - npm vm2: affected <= 3.10.5; fixed in 3.11.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `npm ls vm2 --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on vm2. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-hw58-p9xv-2mjh (OSV record GHSA-hw58-p9xv-2mjh lists affected ranges: npm vm2 >=0 <3.11.0 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-hw58-p9xv-2mjh (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-hw58-p9xv-2mjh lists affected ranges: npm vm2 >=0 <=3.10.5) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
