Valtimo has SpEL injection via StandardEvaluationContext that allows Remote Code Execution by admin users

CVE-2026-42555GHSA-j7j9-5253-f7vh

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (com.ritense.valtimo:contract 13.23.0; com.ritense.valtimo:document 12.32.0; com.ritense.valtimo:case 13.23.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Summary Multiple classes evaluate Spring Expression Language (SpEL) expressions from user-supplied input using StandardEvaluationContext, which provides unrestricted access to Java types and methods. An authenticated user with the ADMIN role can achieve Remote Code Execution and credential exfiltration. Impact An attacker with ADMIN credentials can: - Execute arbitrary OS commands via T(java.lang.Runtime).getRuntime().exec('...') - Exfiltrate all environment variables (database passwords, API keys, Keycloak secrets) via T(java.lang.System).getenv() - Read JVM system properties via T(java.lang.System).getProperties() - Load arbitrary classes via T(java.lang.Class).forName('...') Affected Components 1. DocumentMigrationService (since 12.0.0) Exploitable through the document migration REST API: - POST /api/management/v1/document-definition/migrate - POST /api/management/v1/document-definition/migration/conflicts The malicious SpEL expression is supplied in the source or target field of…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-42555

Advisory: Valtimo has SpEL injection via StandardEvaluationContext that allows Remote Code Execution by admin users
IDs: CVE-2026-42555, GHSA-j7j9-5253-f7vh
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-42555 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:45 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.1)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: com.ritense.valtimo:contract 13.23.0; com.ritense.valtimo:document 12.32.0; com.ritense.valtimo:case 13.23.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven com.ritense.valtimo:contract: affected >= 13.4.0, < 13.23.0; fixed in 13.23.0
- Maven com.ritense.valtimo:document: affected >= 12.0.0, < 12.32.0; fixed in 12.32.0
- Maven com.ritense.valtimo:case: affected >= 13.0.0, < 13.23.0; fixed in 13.23.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven com.ritense.valtimo:contract: check the installed version with your package manager.
- Maven com.ritense.valtimo:document: check the installed version with your package manager.
- Maven com.ritense.valtimo:case: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on com.ritense.valtimo:contract, com.ritense.valtimo:document, com.ritense.valtimo:case.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
