Axios: Header Injection via Prototype Pollution

CVE-2026-42035GHSA-6chq-wfr3-2hj9

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (axios 1.15.1, 0.31.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Affected packages

  • npm axios

    Affected
    >= 1.0.0, < 1.15.1<= 0.31.0
    Fixed in
    0.31.1, 1.15.1

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary A prototype pollution gadget exists in the Axios HTTP adapter (lib/adapters/http.js) that allows an attacker to inject arbitrary HTTP headers into outgoing requests. The vulnerability exploits duck-type checking of the data payload, where if Object.prototype is polluted with getHeaders, append, pipe, on, once, and Symbol.toStringTag, Axios misidentifies any plain object payload as a FormData instance and calls the attacker-controlled getHeaders() function, merging the returned headers into the outgoing request. The vulnerable code resides exclusively in lib/adapters/http.js. The prototype pollution source does not need to originate from Axios itself — any prototype pollution primitive in any dependency in the application's dependency tree is sufficient to trigger this gadget. Prerequisites: A prototype pollution primitive must exist somewhere in the application's dependency chain (e.g., via lodash.merge, qs, JSON5, or any deep-merge utility processing attacker-controlled…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-42035

Advisory: Axios: Header Injection via Prototype Pollution
IDs: CVE-2026-42035, GHSA-6chq-wfr3-2hj9
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-42035 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:51 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.4)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: axios 1.15.1, 0.31.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm axios: affected >= 1.0.0, < 1.15.1; <= 0.31.0; fixed in 0.31.1, 1.15.1

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls axios --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on axios.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
