OpenTelemetry.Sampler.AWS & OpenTelemetry.Resources.AWS have unbounded HTTP response body reads
CVE-2026-41173GHSA-28xm-prxc-5866
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (opentelemetry.resources.aws 1.15.1; opentelemetry.sampler.aws 0.1.0-alpha.8), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Summary OpenTelemetry.Sampler.AWS reads unbounded HTTP response bodies from a configured AWS X-Ray remote sampling endpoint into memory. OpenTelemetry.Resources.AWS reads unbounded HTTP response bodies from a configured AWS EC2/ECS/EKS remote instance metadata service endpoint into memory. Both of these would allow an attacker-controlled endpoint or be acting as a Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) to cause excessive memory allocation and possible process termination (via Out of Memory (OOM)). Details OpenTelemetry.Sampler.AWS AWSXRaySamplerClient.DoRequestAsync called HttpClient.SendAsync followed by ReadAsStringAsync(), which materializes the entire HTTP response body into a single in-memory string with no size limit. The sampling endpoint is configurable via AWSXRayRemoteSamplerBuilder.SetEndpoint (default: http://localhost:2000). An attacker who controls the configured endpoint, or who can intercept traffic to it (MitM), can return an arbitrarily large response body. This causes unbounded…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-41173 Advisory: OpenTelemetry.Sampler.AWS & OpenTelemetry.Resources.AWS have unbounded HTTP response body reads IDs: CVE-2026-41173, GHSA-28xm-prxc-5866 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-41173 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 17:04 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.9) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: opentelemetry.resources.aws 1.15.1; opentelemetry.sampler.aws 0.1.0-alpha.8. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - NuGet opentelemetry.resources.aws: affected < 1.15.1; fixed in 1.15.1 - NuGet opentelemetry.sampler.aws: affected < 0.1.0-alpha.8; fixed in 0.1.0-alpha.8 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - NuGet opentelemetry.resources.aws: check the installed version with your package manager. - NuGet opentelemetry.sampler.aws: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on opentelemetry.resources.aws, opentelemetry.sampler.aws. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-28xm-prxc-5866 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-28xm-prxc-5866 lists affected ranges: NuGet opentelemetry.sampler.aws >=0 =0 <1.15.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
