Tekton Pipeline: Git Resolver Unsanitized Revision Parameter Enables git Argument Injection Leading to RCE

CVE-2026-40938GHSA-94jr-7pqp-xhcq

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/tektoncd/pipeline 1.11.1, 1.9.3, 1.6.2, 1.3.4, 1.0.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Summary The git resolver's revision parameter is passed directly as a positional argument to git fetch without any validation that it does not begin with a - character. Because git parses flags from mixed positional arguments, an attacker can inject arbitrary git fetch flags such as --upload-pack=<binary. Combined with the validateRepoURL function explicitly permitting URLs that begin with / (local filesystem paths), a tenant who can submit ResolutionRequest objects can chain these two behaviors to execute an arbitrary binary on the resolver pod. The tekton-pipelines-resolvers ServiceAccount holds cluster-wide get/list/watch on all Secrets, so code execution on the resolver pod enables full cluster-wide secret exfiltration. Details Root Cause 1 — Unvalidated revision parameter passed to git fetch pkg/resolution/resolver/git/repository.go:85: execGit invokes exec.CommandContext("git", ...) — no shell is used, so shell metacharacters cannot be injected. However, git itself parses flags…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-40938

Advisory: Tekton Pipeline: Git Resolver Unsanitized Revision Parameter Enables git Argument Injection Leading to RCE
IDs: CVE-2026-40938, GHSA-94jr-7pqp-xhcq
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-40938 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:27 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.5)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/tektoncd/pipeline 1.11.1, 1.9.3, 1.6.2, 1.3.4, 1.0.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/tektoncd/pipeline: affected >= 1.10.0, < 1.11.1; >= 1.7.0, < 1.9.3; >= 1.4.0, < 1.6.2; >= 1.2.0, < 1.3.4; >= 1.0.0, < 1.0.2; fixed in 1.0.2, 1.11.1, 1.9.3, 1.6.2, 1.3.4

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/tektoncd/pipeline: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/tektoncd/pipeline.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
