MantisBT has Potential Referer-Based Reflected HTML Injection / XSS in Tag Update Page

CVE-2026-40598GHSA-6jh4-47v2-4g37

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (mantisbt/mantisbt 2.28.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Improper escaping of the redirection page (retrieved from the request's Referer header) allows an attacker to inject HTML. While this is generally not directly actionable as modern browsers will URL-encode special characters, on some specific server configurations this could poison the cache, leading to cross-site scripting. Impact Cross-site scripting (XSS). Patches - b1ebc57763f104eb5f541b7b4d1ce6948168abd9 Workarounds None Credits Thanks to siunam (Tang Cheuk Hei) for discovering and responsibly reporting the issue.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-40598

Advisory: MantisBT has Potential Referer-Based Reflected HTML Injection / XSS in Tag Update Page
IDs: CVE-2026-40598, GHSA-6jh4-47v2-4g37
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-40598 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:48 UTC)

Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: mantisbt/mantisbt 2.28.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Packagist mantisbt/mantisbt: affected <= 2.28.1; fixed in 2.28.2

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Packagist mantisbt/mantisbt: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on mantisbt/mantisbt.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-6jh4-47v2-4g37 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-6jh4-47v2-4g37 lists affected ranges: Packagist mantisbt/mantisbt >=0 <=2.28.1)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
