@adonisjs/http-server has an Open Redirect vulnerability

CVE-2026-40255GHSA-6qvv-pj99-48qm

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (@adonisjs/http-server 8.2.0, 7.8.1; @adonisjs/core 7.3.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Impact The response.redirect().back() method in @adonisjs/http-server is vulnerable to open redirects. The method reads the Referer header from the incoming HTTP request and redirects to that URL without validating the host. An attacker who can influence the Referer header (for example, by linking a user through an attacker-controlled page before a form submission) can cause the application to redirect users to a malicious external site. This affects all AdonisJS applications that use response.redirect().back() or response.redirect('back'). The vulnerability is classified as CWE-601: URL Redirection to Untrusted Site ('Open Redirect'). Patches This has been fixed in @adonisjs/http-server version 8.2.0. The back() method now validates the Referer header's host against the request's own Host header. Referrers from unrecognized hosts are rejected and the redirect falls back to / (or a developer-provided fallback URL). Applications that operate across multiple domains can configure…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-40255

Advisory: @adonisjs/http-server has an Open Redirect vulnerability
IDs: CVE-2026-40255, GHSA-6qvv-pj99-48qm
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-40255 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:48 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.1)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: @adonisjs/http-server 8.2.0, 7.8.1; @adonisjs/core 7.3.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm @adonisjs/http-server: affected >= 8.0.0-next.0, < 8.2.0; < 7.8.1; fixed in 8.2.0, 7.8.1
- npm @adonisjs/core: affected < 7.3.1; fixed in 7.3.1

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls @adonisjs/http-server --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.
- `npm ls @adonisjs/core --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on @adonisjs/http-server, @adonisjs/core.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
