quarkus-openapi-generator extension has Zip Slip Path Traversal in ApicurioCodegenWrapper class

CVE-2026-40180GHSA-jx2w-vp7f-456q

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (io.quarkiverse.openapi.generator:quarkus-openapi-generator 2.16.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary A path traversal vulnerability was discovered in the quarkus-openapi-generator extension Details The unzip() method in ApicurioCodegenWrapper.java extracts ZIP entries without validating that the resolved file path stays within the intended output directory. At line 101, the destination is constructed as new File(toOutputDir, entry.getName()) and the content is written immediately. A malicious ZIP archive containing entries with path traversal sequences (e.g., ../../malicious.java) would write files outside the target directory. The interesting thing is that the client module in the same repository already has the correct fix. OpenApiGeneratorStreamCodeGen.java at line 137 performs proper normalize() and startsWith() validation. The server module was simply missed. PoC This vulnerability is exploitable when an attacker controls or can intercept the ZIP archive served by the Apicurio registry. In environments where the registry connection is over an untrusted network or where…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-40180

Advisory: quarkus-openapi-generator extension has Zip Slip Path Traversal in ApicurioCodegenWrapper class
IDs: CVE-2026-40180, GHSA-jx2w-vp7f-456q
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-40180 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:45 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.3)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: io.quarkiverse.openapi.generator:quarkus-openapi-generator 2.16.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven io.quarkiverse.openapi.generator:quarkus-openapi-generator: affected <= 2.15.0; fixed in 2.16.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven io.quarkiverse.openapi.generator:quarkus-openapi-generator: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on io.quarkiverse.openapi.generator:quarkus-openapi-generator.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-jx2w-vp7f-456q (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-jx2w-vp7f-456q lists affected ranges: Maven io.quarkiverse.openapi.generator:quarkus-openapi-generator >=0 <=2.15.0)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
