PraisonAIAgents has an OS Command Injection via shell=True in Memory Hooks Executor (memory/hooks.py)

CVE-2026-40111GHSA-v7px-3835-7gjx

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (praisonaiagents 1.5.128), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary The memory hooks executor in praisonaiagents passes a user-controlled command string directly to subprocess.run() with shell=True at src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/memory/hooks.py lines 303 to 305. No sanitization, no shlex.quote(), no character filter, and no allowlist check exists anywhere in this file. Shell metacharacters including semicolons, pipes, ampersands, backticks, dollar-sign substitutions, and newlines are interpreted by /bin/sh before the intended command executes. Two independent attack surfaces exist. The first is via preruncommand and postruncommand hook event types registered through the hooks configuration. The second and more severe surface is the .praisonai/hooks.json lifecycle configuration, where hooks registered for events such as BEFORETOOL and AFTERTOOL fire automatically during agent operation. An agent that gains file-write access through prompt injection can overwrite .praisonai/hooks.json and have its payload execute silently at every…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-40111

Advisory: PraisonAIAgents has an OS Command Injection via shell=True in Memory Hooks Executor (memory/hooks.py)
IDs: CVE-2026-40111, GHSA-v7px-3835-7gjx
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-40111 (revision 4, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:40 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.3)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: praisonaiagents 1.5.128. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- PyPI praisonaiagents: affected <= 1.5.126; fixed in 1.5.128

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `python -m pip show praisonaiagents`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on praisonaiagents.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
