Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Affected Versions version ≤ 2.7.8 (latest version at time of disclosure) https://github.com/openmrs/openmrs-core Impact The /openmrs/moduleResources/{moduleid} endpoint in OpenMRS Core is vulnerable to a path traversal attack. The ModuleResourcesServlet does not properly validate user-supplied path input, allowing an attacker to traverse directories and read arbitrary files from the server filesystem (e.g., /etc/passwd, application configuration files containing database credentials). This endpoint serves static module resources (CSS, JS, images) and is not protected by authentication filters, as these resources are required for rendering the login page. Therefore, this vulnerability can be exploited by an unauthenticated attacker. Note: Successful exploitation requires the target deployment to run on Apache Tomcat < 8.5.31, where the ..; path parameter bypass is not mitigated by the container. Deployments on Tomcat ≥ 8.5.31 / ≥ 9.0.10 are protected at the container level, though the…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-40075

Advisory: OpenMRS ModuleResourcesServlet has Path Traversal that Leads to Arbitrary File Read
IDs: CVE-2026-40075, GHSA-jjgj-cx3q-pw4w
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-40075 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:45 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.2)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Partial vendor fix; fixed versions by package: org.openmrs.web:openmrs-web 2.8.6. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven org.openmrs.web:openmrs-web: affected <= 2.7.8; >= 2.8.0, <= 2.8.5; fixed in 2.8.6

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven org.openmrs.web:openmrs-web: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on org.openmrs.web:openmrs-web.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
