Vikunja vulnerable to Privilege Escalation via Project Reparenting
CVE-2026-35595GHSA-2vq4-854f-5c72
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (code.vikunja.io/api 2.3.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary A user with Write-level access to a project can escalate their permissions to Admin by moving the project under a project they own. After reparenting, the recursive permission CTE resolves ownership of the new parent as Admin on the moved project. The attacker can then delete the project, manage shares, and remove other users' access. Details The CanUpdate check at pkg/models/projectpermissions.go:139-148 only requires CanWrite on the new parent project when changing parentprojectid. However, Vikunja's permission model uses a recursive CTE that walks up the project hierarchy to compute permissions. Moving a project under a different parent changes the permission inheritance chain. When a user has inherited Write access (from a parent project share) and reparents the child project under their own project tree, the CTE resolves their ownership of the new parent as Admin (permission level 2) on the moved project. Proof of Concept Tested on Vikunja v2.2.2. Output: The attacker…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-35595 Advisory: Vikunja vulnerable to Privilege Escalation via Project Reparenting IDs: CVE-2026-35595, GHSA-2vq4-854f-5c72 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-35595 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:19 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 8.3) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: code.vikunja.io/api 2.3.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go code.vikunja.io/api: affected <= 2.2.2; fixed in 2.3.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go code.vikunja.io/api: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on code.vikunja.io/api. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-2vq4-854f-5c72 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-2vq4-854f-5c72 lists affected ranges: Go code.vikunja.io/api >=0 <=2.2.2) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
