@tinacms/graphql has Path Traversal that leads to overwrite of arbitrary files

CVE-2026-33949GHSA-v9p7-gf3q-h779

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (@tinacms/graphql 2.2.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary A Path Traversal vulnerability in @tinacms/graphql allows unauthenticated users to write and overwrite arbitrary files within the project root. This is achieved by manipulating the relativePath parameter in GraphQL mutations. The impact includes the ability to replace critical server configuration files and potentially execute arbitrary commands by sabotaging build scripts. Details The vulnerability exists in the path validation logic within @tinacms/graphql. Specifically, the regex-based validation in getValidatedPath fails to recognize backslashes (\) as directory separators on non-Windows platforms (Mac/Linux). An attacker can provide a path like x\..\..\..\package.json, which bypasses the validation check but is subsequently treated as a traversal path during file I/O operations by the underlying fs modules and path normalization utilities. Incriminated code areas: - packages/@tinacms/graphql/src/database/bridge/filesystem.ts: assertWithinBase function. -…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-33949

Advisory: @tinacms/graphql has Path Traversal that leads to overwrite of arbitrary files
IDs: CVE-2026-33949, GHSA-v9p7-gf3q-h779
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-33949 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:47 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.1)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: @tinacms/graphql 2.2.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm @tinacms/graphql: affected <= 2.2.1; fixed in 2.2.2

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls @tinacms/graphql --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on @tinacms/graphql.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
