Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary The setconfigvalue() API endpoint allows users with the non-admin SETTINGS permission to modify any configuration option without restriction. The reconnect.script config option controls a file path that is passed directly to subprocess.run() in the thread manager's reconnect logic. A SETTINGS user can set this to any executable file on the system, achieving Remote Code Execution. The only validation in setconfigvalue() is a hardcoded check for general.storagefolder — all other security-critical settings including reconnect.script are writable without any allowlist or path restriction. Details The vulnerability chain spans two components: 1. Unrestricted config write — src/pyload/core/api/init.py:210-243 The Perms.SETTINGS permission (value 128) is a non-admin permission flag. The only hardcoded validation is for general.storagefolder. The reconnect.script option is written directly to config with no path validation, allowlist, or sanitization. 2. Arbitrary script execution —…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-33509 Advisory: pyLoad SETTINGS Permission Users Can Achieve Remote Code Execution via Unrestricted Reconnect Script Configuration IDs: CVE-2026-33509, GHSA-r7mc-x6x7-cqxx Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-33509 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:40 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI pyload-ng: affected >= 0.4.0, <= 0.5.0b3.dev96 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show pyload-ng`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on pyload-ng. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-r7mc-x6x7-cqxx (OSV record GHSA-r7mc-x6x7-cqxx lists affected ranges: PyPI pyload-ng >=0.4.0 <=0.5.0b3.dev96) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-r7mc-x6x7-cqxx (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-r7mc-x6x7-cqxx lists affected ranges: PyPI pyload-ng >=0.4.0 <=0.5.0b3.dev96) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
