DDEV has ZipSlip path traversal in tar and zip archive extraction

CVE-2026-32885GHSA-x2xq-qhjf-5mvg

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/ddev/ddev 1.25.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary The DDEV local dev tool has unsanitized extraction in both Untar() and Unzip() functions in pkg/archive/archive.go. This flaw allows users to download and extract archives from remote sources without path validation. Vulnerable Code pkg/archive/archive.go:235 (Untar): pkg/archive/archive.go:342 (Unzip): Both functions create directories via os.MkdirAll and files via os.Create using the unsanitized path. Impact Local development tool that downloads and extracts archives from remote sources (add-ons, updates). Malicious archive → arbitrary file write on developer machine. Proof of Concept Output: Note: Both Untar (archive.go:235) and Unzip (archive.go:342) use the same filepath.Join(dest, file.Name) pattern without containment checks. This PoC demonstrates the tar path; the zip path is analogously exploitable. Suggested Fix Add path containment check in both Untar and Unzip functions. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-32885

Advisory: DDEV has ZipSlip path traversal in tar and zip archive extraction
IDs: CVE-2026-32885, GHSA-x2xq-qhjf-5mvg
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-32885 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:19 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.5)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/ddev/ddev 1.25.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/ddev/ddev: affected < 1.25.2; fixed in 1.25.2

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/ddev/ddev: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/ddev/ddev.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
