Open WebUI has unauthorized deletion of knowledge files

CVE-2026-29070GHSA-26gm-93rw-cchf

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (open-webui 0.8.6), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary An access control check is missing when deleting a file from a knowledge base. The only check being done is that the user has write access to the knowledge base (or is admin), but NOT that the file actually belongs to this knowledge base. It is thus possible to delete arbitrary files from arbitrary knowledge bases (as long as one knows the file id) Details The source code at https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui/blob/main/backend/openwebui/routers/knowledge.py#L803 does not properly validate that the file being deleted belongs to the current knowledge base: PoC Victim has a knowledge base with a file (id: 9db6dcee-bb3b-483e-aaf3-310fda366af1) Attacker creates their own collection (id: dde9e2b6-21c9-4aa1-a1cf-8cb0e4392f2b) Attacker deletes the victim file from their own collection: The file is then deleted from the victim's knowledge base. Impact Arbitrary file deletion

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-29070

Advisory: Open WebUI has unauthorized deletion of knowledge files
IDs: CVE-2026-29070, GHSA-26gm-93rw-cchf
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-29070 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:37 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.4)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: open-webui 0.8.6. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- PyPI open-webui: affected < 0.8.6; fixed in 0.8.6

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `python -m pip show open-webui`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on open-webui.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
