jackson-core has Nesting Depth Constraint Bypass in UTF8DataInputJsonParser potentially allowing Resource Exhaustion

CVE-2026-29062GHSA-6v53-7c9g-w56r

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (tools.jackson.core:jackson-core 3.1.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary The UTF8DataInputJsonParser, which is used when parsing from a java.io.DataInput source, bypasses the maxNestingDepth constraint (default: 500) defined in StreamReadConstraints. A similar issue was found in ReaderBasedJsonParser. This allows a user to supply a JSON document with excessive nesting, which can cause a StackOverflowError when the structure is processed, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS). The related fix for com.fasterxml.jackson.core:jackson-core, CVE-2025-52999, was not fully applied to tools.jackson.core:jackson-core until the 3.1.0 release. It is recommended that 3.0.x users upgrade. Patches jackson-core contains a configurable limit for how deep Jackson will traverse in an input document. This check was missing in a few places in tools.jackson.core:jackson-core. The change is in https://github.com/FasterXML/jackson-core/pull/1554. jackson-core will throw a StreamConstraintsException if the limit is reached. jackson-databind also benefits from this change…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-29062

Advisory: jackson-core has Nesting Depth Constraint Bypass in `UTF8DataInputJsonParser` potentially allowing Resource Exhaustion
IDs: CVE-2026-29062, GHSA-6v53-7c9g-w56r
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-29062 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:44 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.7)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: tools.jackson.core:jackson-core 3.1.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven tools.jackson.core:jackson-core: affected >= 3.0.0, < 3.1.0; fixed in 3.1.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven tools.jackson.core:jackson-core: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on tools.jackson.core:jackson-core.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-6v53-7c9g-w56r (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-6v53-7c9g-w56r lists affected ranges: Maven tools.jackson.core:jackson-core >=3.0.0 <3.1.0)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
