Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary A critical business logic vulnerability exists in the password reset mechanism of vikunja/api that allows password reset tokens to be reused indefinitely. Due to a failure to invalidate tokens upon use and a critical logic bug in the token cleanup cron job, reset tokens remain valid forever. This allows an attacker who intercepts a single reset token (via logs, browser history, or phishing) to perform a complete, persistent account takeover at any point in the future, bypassing standard authentication controls. Technical Analysis The vulnerability stems from two distinct logic errors in the pkg/user/ package that confirm the tokens are never removed. 1. Logic Error in Password Reset (No Invalidation) In pkg/user/userpasswordreset.go, the ResetPassword function successfully updates the user's password but fails to delete the reset token used to authorize the request. Instead, it attempts to delete a TokenEmailConfirm token, leaving the TokenPasswordReset active. Vulnerable…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-28268 Advisory: Vikunja Vulnerable to Account Takeover via Password Reset Token Reuse IDs: CVE-2026-28268, GHSA-rfjg-6m84-crj2 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-28268 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:14 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.8) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go code.vikunja.io/api: affected <= 0.24.6 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go code.vikunja.io/api: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on code.vikunja.io/api. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-rfjg-6m84-crj2 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-rfjg-6m84-crj2 lists affected ranges: Go code.vikunja.io/api >=0 <=0.24.6) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
