Rack's improper unfolding of folded multipart headers preserves CRLF in parsed parameter values

CVE-2026-26962GHSA-rx22-g9mx-qrhv

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (rack 3.2.6), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Affected packages

  • RubyGems rack

    Affected

Summary Rack::Multipart::Parser unfolds folded multipart part headers incorrectly. When a multipart header contains an obs-fold sequence, Rack preserves the embedded CRLF in parsed parameter values such as filename or name instead of removing the folded line break during unfolding. As a result, applications that later reuse those parsed values in HTTP response headers may be vulnerable to downstream header injection or response splitting. Details Rack::Multipart::Parser accepts folded multipart header values and unfolds them during parsing. However, the unfolding behavior does not fully remove the embedded line break sequence from the parsed value. This means a multipart part header such as: can result in a parsed parameter value that still contains CRLF characters. The issue is not that Rack creates a second multipart header field. Rather, the problem is that CRLF remains embedded in the parsed metadata value after unfolding. If an application later uses that value in a…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-26962

Advisory: Rack's improper unfolding of folded multipart headers preserves CRLF in parsed parameter values
IDs: CVE-2026-26962, GHSA-rx22-g9mx-qrhv
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-26962 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:52 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 4.8)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: rack 3.2.6. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- RubyGems rack: affected >= 3.2.0, < 3.2.6; fixed in 3.2.6

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- RubyGems rack: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on rack.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
