PYSEC-2026-3978
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (libusb 1.0.30), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
libusb before version 1.0.30 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability that allows attackers to crash applications by supplying a malformed USB configuration descriptor where an interface claims bNumEndpoints greater than zero but is followed by a class-specific descriptor whose bLength exceeds the remaining buffer size, causing parse_interface() to return early without allocating the endpoint array. Attackers can exploit this flaw through libusb_get_active_config_descriptor or libusb_get_config_descriptor by providing crafted descriptors via virtualized USB passthrough, file-based descriptor parsing, or network sources, causing any application iterating over endpoints to dereference a NULL endpoint pointer and crash.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-23679 Advisory: PYSEC-2026-3978 IDs: CVE-2026-23679 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-23679 (revision 1, source checked 24 Oct 2026, 04:13 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: libusb 1.0.30. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI libusb: affected < 1.0.30; fixed in 1.0.30 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show libusb`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on libusb. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2026-3978 (OSV record PYSEC-2026-3978 lists affected ranges: PyPI libusb >=0 <1.0.30 (fixed)) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
