Gitea: Token scope bypass on web archive download endpoint
CVE-2026-20706GHSA-cr4g-f395-h25h
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (code.gitea.io/gitea 1.26.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Summary PR #37698 added checkDownloadTokenScope to /raw/, /media/, and attachment download web endpoints. The /archive/ endpoint (repo.Download in routers/web/repo/repo.go:372) was not included in the fix. This endpoint accepts OAuth2 tokens via webAuth.AllowOAuth2 (registered at routers/web/web.go:1649-1652) but does not call checkDownloadTokenScope or CheckRepoScopedToken. A personal access token with any non-repository scope (e.g., read:issue or read:misc) can download full repository archives (zip/tar.gz) of private repositories the token owner has access to. Impact Scope escalation: tokens scoped to non-repository categories can access full repository content through the archive download endpoint. Higher impact than endpoints fixed in #37698 because /archive/ serves the entire repository. Steps to Reproduce 1. Create a personal access token with ONLY read:misc scope 2. Access: GET /{owner}/{private-repo}/archive/main.tar.gz 3. Archive is served (200 OK) instead of being rejected…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-20706 Advisory: Gitea: Token scope bypass on web archive download endpoint IDs: CVE-2026-20706, GHSA-cr4g-f395-h25h Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-20706 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:24 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.3) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: code.gitea.io/gitea 1.26.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go code.gitea.io/gitea: affected <= 1.26.1; fixed in 1.26.2 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go code.gitea.io/gitea: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on code.gitea.io/gitea. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-cr4g-f395-h25h (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-cr4g-f395-h25h lists affected ranges: Go code.gitea.io/gitea >=0 <=1.26.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
