Atlantis: OS command injection through PR-controlled Terraform workspace enables RCE during plan

CVE-2026-116676GHSA-rjh2-4xgw-p2hj

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/runatlantis/atlantis 0.47.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary Atlantis passes the Terraform `workspace` value from a pull request's `atlantis.yaml` into a shell command without quoting or escaping it. A contributor whose pull request is eligible for an Atlantis plan can include shell metacharacters in the workspace name and execute arbitrary commands as the Atlantis service account. This does not require custom workflows, `allow_custom_workflows`, or permission to run `terraform apply`. The executed command inherits the Atlantis process environment, which commonly contains cloud-provider, Terraform, and VCS credentials.

Details Verified against current `upstream/main` commit `92ce5c51d1a050357e44df3535483425e59fa984` on August 13, 2026. The vulnerable data flow is: 1. The PR-controlled project workspace is validated in `server/core/config/raw/project.go`. Validation rejects only `..`, `/`, and `\`.…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-116676

Advisory: Atlantis: OS command injection through PR-controlled Terraform workspace enables RCE during plan
IDs: CVE-2026-116676, GHSA-rjh2-4xgw-p2hj
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-116676 (revision 2, source checked 28 Oct 2026, 06:30 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.8)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/runatlantis/atlantis 0.47.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/runatlantis/atlantis: affected >= 0.4.0, < 0.47.1; fixed in 0.47.1

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/runatlantis/atlantis: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/runatlantis/atlantis.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
