fpdf2 implicitly loads external URLs and local image paths when rendering attacker-controlled content
CVE-2026-114609GHSA-rw7v-4hrq-x6r9
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (fpdf2 2.8.8), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Summary `fpdf2` implicitly dereferences image resource references supplied to rendering APIs. If an application passes untrusted HTML, SVG, template data, or image paths into those APIs, `fpdf2` may issue outbound HTTP(S) requests or attempt to open local filesystem paths. This behavior is relevant in applications that render untrusted or user-provided input without sanitizing or restricting embedded resource references.
Description In affected versions, `fpdf2` uses a shared internal image-loading mechanism for multiple features. This loader: * fetches `http://` and `https://` URLs over the network * opens other string values as local filesystem paths During document processing, resource references embedded in input content are automatically dereferenced using this mechanism. This behavior is reachable through: * `FPDF.image()` * `FPDF.write_html()` via HTML ` ` * `FPDF.image()` when rendering SVG files containing ` ` or `xlink:href="...">` * template image elements that…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-114609 Advisory: fpdf2 implicitly loads external URLs and local image paths when rendering attacker-controlled content IDs: CVE-2026-114609, GHSA-rw7v-4hrq-x6r9 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-114609 (revision 2, source checked 28 Oct 2026, 06:10 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.8) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: fpdf2 2.8.8. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI fpdf2: affected < 2.8.8; fixed in 2.8.8 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show fpdf2`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on fpdf2. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-rw7v-4hrq-x6r9 (OSV record GHSA-rw7v-4hrq-x6r9 lists affected ranges: PyPI fpdf2 >=0 <2.8.8 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-rw7v-4hrq-x6r9 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-rw7v-4hrq-x6r9 lists affected ranges: PyPI fpdf2 >=0 <=2.8.7) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
