Pillow: Double free in ImagingScaleAffine on calloc failure via Image.transform

CVE-2026-112402GHSA-7mwm-ghpf-9vrm

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (pillow 13.0.0; pillow 13.0.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

``` ============================================================================ Double free in ImagingScaleAffine on calloc failure via Image.transform Location: src/libImaging/Geometry.c:866 in ImagingScaleAffine() Commit: a707c6b21c313880d0771e54965d142dd42358b6 ============================================================================ ``` There is a double free in Pillow's `Image.transform()` that crashes the process when an oversized transform runs out of memory. Instead of only raising `MemoryError`, Pillow frees the output image's memory once while handling the error and then again when the Python object is cleaned up. Anyone who can choose the output size of `Image.transform()` can trigger it, but only on a worker with a memory limit (a common hardening for image workers) or a 32-bit process. The result is a crash of the worker, plus corruption of its heap that has not been shown to be controllable. The bug is in `ImagingScaleAffine()` in `src/libImaging/Geometry.c` (line…
# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-112402
Advisory: Pillow: Double free in ImagingScaleAffine on calloc failure via Image.transform
IDs: CVE-2026-112402, GHSA-7mwm-ghpf-9vrm
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-112402 (revision 10, source checked 30 Oct 2026, 07:30 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.7)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: pillow 13.0.0; pillow 13.0.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.
## Affected components
- Bitnami pillow: affected < 13.0.0; fixed in 13.0.0
- PyPI pillow: affected < 13.0.0; fixed in 13.0.0
## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Bitnami pillow: check the installed version with your package manager.
- `python -m pip show pillow`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.
## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.
## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on pillow.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.
## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.
## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
