AsyncHttpClient: Unbounded WebSocket permessage-deflate decompression enables a decompression-bomb denial of service when compression is enabled
CVE-2026-107227GHSA-x8v2-478q-2hvg
What to do
Partial vendor fix. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check back for a fix.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Impact With WebSocket compression enabled, the client inflates permessage-deflate messages with no limit on the decompressed size. It installed Netty's shared WebSocketClientCompressionHandler.INSTANCE, whose inflater is unbounded, and webSocketMaxFrameSize and webSocketMaxBufferSize only bound the compressed bytes, because the frame aggregator sits in front of the inflater. A malicious or compromised WebSocket server, or anyone on the path of a ws:// connection, can therefore send a message of about 2 MiB that inflates to about 2 GiB, the most a Netty buffer can hold. The client then copies the inflated message again to hand it to the listener. That exhausts the heap of a typically sized JVM. Netty catches the resulting OutOfMemoryError and closes that connection, but while the buffer is live any other allocation in the process can fail too, and a server that keeps sending such messages, on one connection or several, keeps the client at heap exhaustion. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-107227 Advisory: AsyncHttpClient: Unbounded WebSocket permessage-deflate decompression enables a decompression-bomb denial of service when compression is enabled IDs: CVE-2026-107227, GHSA-x8v2-478q-2hvg Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-107227 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:58 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Partial vendor fix; fixed versions by package: org.asynchttpclient:async-http-client 3.0.14. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Maven org.asynchttpclient:async-http-client: affected >= 3.0.0, <= 3.0.13; >= 2.2.0, <= 2.16.1; fixed in 3.0.14 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Maven org.asynchttpclient:async-http-client: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on org.asynchttpclient:async-http-client. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-x8v2-478q-2hvg (OSV record GHSA-x8v2-478q-2hvg lists affected ranges: Maven org.asynchttpclient:async-http-client >=3.0.0 =2.2.0 <=2.16.1) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-x8v2-478q-2hvg (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-x8v2-478q-2hvg lists affected ranges: Maven org.asynchttpclient:async-http-client >=3.0.0 =2.2.0 <=2.16.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
