Axios: maxRedirects: 0 is not enforced by the fetch adapter, allowing redirect-based SSRF

CVE-2026-101907GHSA-r4gj-5m52-g5wh

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (axios 1.20.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Affected packages

  • npm axios

    Affected
    >= 1.17.0, < 1.20.0

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary Axios exposes maxRedirects to limit redirect following, and maxRedirects: 0 is used by applications as a redirect-based SSRF guard. The Node HTTP adapter enforces this option. The fetch adapter does not read it and does not set a Fetch API redirect mode, so the runtime default of redirect: 'follow' applies. Applications are affected when they rely on maxRedirects: 0 and use the fetch adapter, either explicitly or because the runtime selects it. Impact An attacker who controls the initial URL or a redirecting server can cause a fetch-adapter request to follow a redirect even though the caller configured maxRedirects: 0. If the redirect target is reachable only from the application environment, this can expose internal responses or trigger state-changing internal endpoints. This should not be described as unconditional SSRF. The bypass requires a redirect source, such as an attacker-controlled server or open redirect, and an application that trusted maxRedirects: 0 as the…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-101907

Advisory: Axios: maxRedirects: 0 is not enforced by the fetch adapter, allowing redirect-based SSRF
IDs: CVE-2026-101907, GHSA-r4gj-5m52-g5wh
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-101907 (revision 4, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:06 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.0)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: axios 1.20.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm axios: affected >= 1.17.0, < 1.20.0; fixed in 1.20.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls axios --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on axios.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
