Insecure Deserialization (pickle) in pdfminer.six CMap Loader β€” Local Privesc

CVE-2025-70559GHSA-f83h-ghpp-7wcc

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (pdfminer-six 20251230), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

πŸš€ Overview This report demonstrates a real-world privilege escalation vulnerability in pdfminer.six due to unsafe usage of Python's pickle module for CMap file loading. It shows how a low-privileged user can gain root access (or escalate to any service account) by exploiting insecure deserialization in a typical multi-user or server environment. 🚨 Special Note This advisory addresses a distinct vulnerability from GHSA-wf5f-4jwr-ppcp (CVE-2025-64512). While the previous CVE claims to mitigate issues related to unsafe deserialization, the patch introduced in commit b808ee05dd7f0c8ea8ec34bdf394d40e63501086 does not address the vulnerability reported here. Based on testing performed against the latest version of the library (comparison view), the issue remains exploitable through local privilege escalation due to continued unsafe use of pickle files. The Dockerfile is hence modified to run test against this claim. This demonstrates that the patch for CVE-2025-64512 is incomplete: the…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2025-70559

Advisory: Insecure Deserialization (pickle) in pdfminer.six CMap Loader β€” Local Privesc
IDs: CVE-2025-70559, GHSA-f83h-ghpp-7wcc
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-70559 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:36 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.8)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: pdfminer-six 20251230. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- PyPI pdfminer-six: affected < 20251230; fixed in 20251230

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `python -m pip show pdfminer-six`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on pdfminer-six.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
