Formwork CMS has Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerebility in Blog Tags

CVE-2025-65956GHSA-7j46-f57w-76pj

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (getformwork/formwork 2.2.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary Inserting unsanitized data into the blog tag field in Formwork CMS results in stored cross‑site scripting (XSS). Any user with credentials to the Formwork CMS who accesses or edits an affected blog post will have attacker‑controlled script executed in their browser. Because the issue is persistent and impacts privileged administrative workflows, the severity is elevated. Details Formwork CMS fails to properly sanitize data inserted into tags, before saving them and rendering them into the edit blog interface. When a specially crafted tag becomes saved as a tag into the system, it is unable to be removed. Any attempt to remove the tag from the affected post, causes the XSS to trigger once again. Additionally, once the malicious tag is present, managing standard tags becomes impossible. This is due to script execution on attempted modification. This leads to a form of interface lockout where the payload continually reinserts itself due to the stored, unsafe rendering. Impact…

IDs: CVE-2025-65956, GHSA-7j46-f57w-76pj
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-65956 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:38 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.5)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: getformwork/formwork 2.2.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Packagist getformwork/formwork: affected < 2.2.0; fixed in 2.2.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Packagist getformwork/formwork: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on getformwork/formwork.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
