Incus vulnerable to local privilege escalation through custom storage volumes

CVE-2025-64507GHSA-56mx-8g9f-5crf

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/lxc/incus/v6 6.19.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact This affects any Incus user in an environment where an unprivileged user may have root access to a container with an attached custom storage volume that has the security.shifted property set to true as well as access to the host as an unprivileged user. The most common case for this would be systems using incus-user with the less privileged incus group to provide unprivileged users with an isolated restricted access to Incus. Such users may be able to create a custom storage volume with the necessary property (depending on kernel and filesystem support) and can then write a setuid binary from within the container which can be executed as an unpriivleged user on the host to gain root privileges. Patches A patch for this issue is available here: https://github.com/lxc/incus/pull/2642 The first commit changes the permissions for any new storage pool, the second commit applies it on startup to all existing storage pools. Workarounds Permissions can be manually restricted until a…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2025-64507

Advisory: Incus vulnerable to local privilege escalation through custom storage volumes
IDs: CVE-2025-64507, GHSA-56mx-8g9f-5crf
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-64507 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:19 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.6)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/lxc/incus/v6 6.19.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/lxc/incus/v6: affected <= 6.18.0; fixed in 6.19.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/lxc/incus/v6: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/lxc/incus/v6.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
