KubeVirt Vulnerable to Arbitrary Host File Read and Write
CVE-2025-64324GHSA-46xp-26xh-hpqh
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (kubevirt.io/kubevirt 1.7.0-rc.0, 1.6.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary The hostDisk feature in KubeVirt allows mounting a host file or directory owned by the user with UID 107 into a VM. However, the implementation of this feature and more specifically the DiskOrCreate option which creates a file if it doesn't exist, has a logic bug that allows an attacker to read and write arbitrary files owned by more privileged users on the host system. Details The hostDisk feature gate in KubeVirt allows mounting a QEMU RAW image directly from the host into a VM. While similar features, such as mounting disk images from a PVC, enforce ownership-based restrictions (e.g., only allowing files owned by specific UID, this mechanism can be subverted. For a RAW disk image to be readable by the QEMU process running within the virt-launcher pod, it must be owned by a user with UID 107. If this ownership check is considered a security barrier, it can be bypassed. In addition, the ownership of the host files mounted via this feature is changed to the user with UID 107.…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2025-64324 Advisory: KubeVirt Vulnerable to Arbitrary Host File Read and Write IDs: CVE-2025-64324, GHSA-46xp-26xh-hpqh Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-64324 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:13 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 8.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: kubevirt.io/kubevirt 1.7.0-rc.0, 1.6.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go kubevirt.io/kubevirt: affected < 1.6.1; >= 1.7.0-alpha.0, < 1.7.0-rc.0; fixed in 1.6.1, 1.7.0-rc.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go kubevirt.io/kubevirt: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on kubevirt.io/kubevirt. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-46xp-26xh-hpqh (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-46xp-26xh-hpqh lists affected ranges: Go kubevirt.io/kubevirt >=0 =1.7.0-alpha.0 <1.7.0-rc.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
