Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Prior to Opencast 17.8 and 18.2 the paella would include and render some user inputs (metadata like title, description, etc.) unfiltered and unmodified. Impact The vulnerability allows attackers to inject and malicious HTML and JavaScript in the player, which would then be executed in the browsers of users watching the prepared media. This can then be used to modify the site or to execute actions in the name of logged-in users. To inject malicious metadata, an attacker needs write access to the system. For example, the ability to upload media and modify metadata. This cannot be exploited by unauthenticated users. Patches This issue is fixed in Opencast 17.8 and 18.2, however they are not published to the Maven registry. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Maven org.opencastproject:opencast-common: affected <= 16.10 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Maven org.opencastproject:opencast-common: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on org.opencastproject:opencast-common. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-m2vg-rmq6-p62r (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-m2vg-rmq6-p62r lists affected ranges: Maven org.opencastproject:opencast-common >=0 <=16.10) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
