astral-tokio-tar has a path traversal in tar extraction
CVE-2025-59825GHSA-3wgq-wrwc-vqmv
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (astral-tokio-tar 0.5.4), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Impact In versions 0.5.3 and earlier of astral-tokio-tar, tar archives may extract outside of their intended destination directory when using the Entry::unpackinraw API. Additionally, the Entry::allowexternalsymlinks control (which defaults to true) could be bypassed via a pair of symlinks that individually point within the destination but combine to point outside of it. These behaviors could be used individually or combined to bypass the intended security control of limiting extraction to the given directory. This in turn would allow an attacker with a malicious tar archive to perform an arbitrary file write and potentially pivot into code execution (e.g. by overwriting a file that the user or system then executes or uses to execute code). The impact of this vulnerability for downstream API users of this crate is high, per above. However, for this crate's main downstream user (uv), the impact of this vulnerability is low due to its overlap with equivalent user capabilities in source…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2025-59825 Advisory: astral-tokio-tar has a path traversal in tar extraction IDs: CVE-2025-59825, GHSA-3wgq-wrwc-vqmv Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-59825 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:39 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.1) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: astral-tokio-tar 0.5.4. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io astral-tokio-tar: affected <= 0.5.3; fixed in 0.5.4 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io astral-tokio-tar: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on astral-tokio-tar. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-3wgq-wrwc-vqmv (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-3wgq-wrwc-vqmv lists affected ranges: crates.io astral-tokio-tar >=0 <=0.5.3) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
