MaterialX Null Pointer Dereference in MaterialXCore Shader Generation due to Unchecked implGraphOutput
CVE-2025-53011GHSA-7qw8-3vmf-gj32
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (materialx 1.39.3), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary When parsing shader nodes in a MTLX file, the MaterialXCore code accesses a potentially null pointer, which can lead to crashes with maliciously crafted files. Details In source/MaterialXCore/Material.cpp, the following code extracts the output nodes for a given implementation graph: However, when defining the implGraphOutput variable by getting the output node, the code doesn't check whether its value is null before accessing its iterator traverseGraph(). This leads to a potential null pointer dereference. PoC Please download nullptrimplgraph.mtlx from the following link: https://github.com/ShielderSec/poc/tree/main/CVE-2025-53011 build/bin/MaterialXView --material nullptrimplgraph.mtlx Impact An attacker could intentionally crash a target program that uses MaterialX by sending a malicious MTLX file.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2025-53011 Advisory: MaterialX Null Pointer Dereference in MaterialXCore Shader Generation due to Unchecked implGraphOutput IDs: CVE-2025-53011, GHSA-7qw8-3vmf-gj32 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-53011 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:32 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Low (CVSS 2.0) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: materialx 1.39.3. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI materialx: affected >= 1.39.2, <= 1.39.2; fixed in 1.39.3 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show materialx`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on materialx. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-7qw8-3vmf-gj32 (OSV record GHSA-7qw8-3vmf-gj32 lists affected ranges: PyPI materialx >=1.39.2 <1.39.3 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-7qw8-3vmf-gj32 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-7qw8-3vmf-gj32 lists affected ranges: PyPI materialx >=1.39.2 <=1.39.2) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
