urllib3 redirects are not disabled when retries are disabled on PoolManager instantiation
CVE-2025-50181GHSA-pq67-6m6q-mj2v
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (urllib3 2.5.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

urllib3 handles redirects and retries using the same mechanism, which is controlled by the Retry object. The most common way to disable redirects is at the request level, as follows: However, it is also possible to disable redirects, for all requests, by instantiating a PoolManager and specifying retries in a way that disable redirects: However, the retries parameter is currently ignored, which means all the above examples don't disable redirects. Affected usages Passing retries on PoolManager instantiation to disable redirects or restrict their number. By default, requests and botocore users are not affected. Impact Redirects are often used to exploit SSRF vulnerabilities. An application attempting to mitigate SSRF or open redirect vulnerabilities by disabling redirects at the PoolManager level will remain vulnerable. Remediation You can remediate this vulnerability with the following steps: Upgrade to a patched version of urllib3. If your organization would benefit from the…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2025-50181 Advisory: urllib3 redirects are not disabled when retries are disabled on PoolManager instantiation IDs: CVE-2025-50181, GHSA-pq67-6m6q-mj2v Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-50181 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:36 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.3) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: urllib3 2.5.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI urllib3: affected < 2.5.0; fixed in 2.5.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show urllib3`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on urllib3. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-pq67-6m6q-mj2v (OSV record GHSA-pq67-6m6q-mj2v lists affected ranges: PyPI urllib3 >=0 <2.5.0 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-pq67-6m6q-mj2v (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-pq67-6m6q-mj2v lists affected ranges: PyPI urllib3 >=0 <2.5.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
