org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-rest-server allows SQL injection in query endpoint of REST API

CVE-2025-32969GHSA-f69v-xrj8-rhxf

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-rest-server 16.10.1, 16.4.6, 15.10.16), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact It is possible for a remote unauthenticated user to escape from the HQL execution context and perform a blind SQL injection to execute arbitrary SQL statements on the database backend, including when "Prevent unregistered users from viewing pages, regardless of the page rights" and "Prevent unregistered users from editing pages, regardless of the page rights" options are enabled. Depending on the used database backend, the attacker may be able to not only obtain confidential information such as password hashes from the database, but also execute UPDATE/INSERT/DELETE queries. The vulnerability may be tested in a default installation of XWIki Standard Flavor, including using the official Docker containers. An example query, which leads to SQL injection with MySQL/MariaDB backend is shown below: When executed, the response from the server will come after a delay of 10 extra seconds, indicating successful execution of the injected SQL statement. An example of a query for the…

IDs: CVE-2025-32969, GHSA-f69v-xrj8-rhxf
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-32969 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:35 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.3)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-rest-server 16.10.1, 16.4.6, 15.10.16. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-rest-server: affected >= 1.8, < 15.10.16; >= 16.0.0-rc-1, < 16.4.6; >= 16.5.0-rc-1, < 16.10.1; fixed in 16.10.1, 16.4.6, 15.10.16

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-rest-server: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-rest-server.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
