tough terminating targets role delegations are not respected
CVE-2025-2886GHSA-v4wr-j3w6-mxqc
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (tough 0.20.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Summary Delegations are a mechanism defined by the TUF specification that allow multiple different identities to provide and sign content within a single repository. Terminating delegations and delegation priority give a TUF repository unambiguous control over how overlapping delegations are resolved. tough erroneously will not terminate a search as required, and will accept information from a lower-priority delegation that should have been ignored. Impact When interacting with TUF repositories that use delegations, the tough client could fetch targets owned by the incorrect role. An actor which had delegated ownership of a subset of a TUF repository could provide arbitrary contents to tough clients for targets owned by the delegating identity. Impacted versions: < v0.20.0 Patches A fix for this issue is available in tough version 0.20.0 and later. Customers are advised to upgrade to version 0.20.0 or later and ensure any forked or derivative code is patched to incorporate the new…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2025-2886 Advisory: tough terminating targets role delegations are not respected IDs: CVE-2025-2886, GHSA-v4wr-j3w6-mxqc Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-2886 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:39 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.7) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: tough 0.20.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io tough: affected < 0.20.0; fixed in 0.20.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io tough: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on tough. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-v4wr-j3w6-mxqc (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-v4wr-j3w6-mxqc lists affected ranges: crates.io tough >=0 <0.20.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
